Averto

Preventing miscommunication amongst our elders through simple language translation
Problem
  • 16% of seniors aged 65+ have limited English proficiency due to diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Existing translation tools, such as Google Translate, inadequately address the needs of seniors, particularly those with dementia.
  • There's a lack of dementia-friendly translation services for non-English speaking seniors.
Solution
  • Averto, an iPad app, was developed with a user-centered design focus to ensure ease of use for our elders.
  • It addresses the communication barriers between non-English speaking seniors and care workers.
  • Averto provides a practical solution to enhance communication in caregiving contexts, particularly for linguistically diverse elderly populations.
Outcome
  • Averto™ was developed in collaboration with the National Ageing Research Institute (NARI) and Mercy Health.
  • The app was trialled with 24 older CALD individuals and 25 care staff, yielding positive results.
  • The successful trial highlights Averto™'s effectiveness in improving communication between culturally and linguistically diverse seniors and their caregivers.
