Preventing miscommunication amongst our elders through simple language translation
Problem
16% of seniors aged 65+ have limited English proficiency due to diverse cultural backgrounds.
Existing translation tools, such as Google Translate, inadequately address the needs of seniors, particularly those with dementia.
There's a lack of dementia-friendly translation services for non-English speaking seniors.
Solution
Averto, an iPad app, was developed with a user-centered design focus to ensure ease of use for our elders.
It addresses the communication barriers between non-English speaking seniors and care workers.
Averto provides a practical solution to enhance communication in caregiving contexts, particularly for linguistically diverse elderly populations.
Outcome
Averto™ was developed in collaboration with the National Ageing Research Institute (NARI) and Mercy Health.
The app was trialled with 24 older CALD individuals and 25 care staff, yielding positive results.
The successful trial highlights Averto™'s effectiveness in improving communication between culturally and linguistically diverse seniors and their caregivers.
